  • Venue: Illinois State Library, 300 S 2nd St, Springfield, Rooms 403 and 404  
  • 9:30 AM Judge Mark VandeWiele (Ret.): Overview of Pension Fund Solvency and of Benefits for retirees, dependents, and survivors.
  • 10:00 AM Terrence Hake, Operation Greylord, An Insider’s Perspective.
  • 2.0 hours MCLE credit, including 2.0 hour Professionalism Responsibility MCLE credit with the Professional Responsibility MCLE credit subject to approval. 
  • No live stream, but video available thereafter.
  • 12:15 PM Complimentary lunch provided.

Retired Judge Mark VandeWiele has been long appreciated by IJA Officers and Board Members for his insights into Illinois judicial pensions and benefits.  Mark follows the developments in the area, understands the details and complexities, and is gifted with explaining it all. 

Former Cook Co prosecutor and Chicago FBI agent Terrence Hake recounts how the FBI, IRS, U.S. Postal Service, Chicago Police Department, and Illinois State Police all worked together under “Operation Greylord” to root out judicial corruption in Cook County during the 1980s.  

Here are a few comments from attendees at Terrence Hake’s fall ISBA CLE presentation:

  • Jaw-dropping telling of a horrendously-dark time for American jurisprudence.
  • Excellent overview of the Greylord Investigation with a very interesting perspective from someone brave enough to stand up for the integrity of our judicial system.
  • Must see CLE for all Illinois lawyers and judges.
  • What a history lesson!
  • This was fascinating coming from someone who actually has first-hand knowledge of Operation Greylord. Every attorney everywhere should view this.  

Illinois Supreme Court Historian John Lupton is the editor of Adjudicating Illinois: Justices of the Illinois Supreme Court and Prairie Justice: A History of Illinois Courts under French, English, and American Law.  He has authored numerous articles and served as executive producer for many documentaries on Abraham Lincoln and famous historic Illinois trials and court proceedings.
